D-logs

The best of both worlds.

D-logs balance timeless warmth with a practical interior. The rounded exterior keeps the classic log look, in a natural hand peeled finish, and the flat interior, in an old world hewn finish, makes furniture placement and decorating straightforward without giving up any authenticity.

A good fit for owners who want the outside to read traditional and the inside to read modern.

A stack of D-logs on a shop floor, the flat hewn faces turned out and the rounded backs behind, every end labeled.

What it looks like

Corners for the D-log

Available corner styles for this profile.

  • The dovetailed corner of a D-log wall: the logs' square-cut ends stacked course on course, stepping out and in where each one locks over the log below, every end labeled with its size.Click to enlarge
    Standard Dovetail Corner
  • The corner of a D-log wall built against a round post: the rounded faces of the D-logs run in from both sides and stop against the post, which stands plumb from the top of the frame down to its foot at the sill.Click to enlarge
    Posted Corner, Round
  • The corner of a D-log wall built against a square timber post: the rounded D-log courses run in from the left and stop against the post, flatter courses run off to the right, and the post stands on a metal sill flashing.Click to enlarge
    Posted Corner, Square
  • A butt and pass corner on a D-log wall against a blue sky: the log ends stacked up the corner, one course running out past the joint and the next butting into it, alternating all the way up.Click to enlarge

The finish, close up

Hand peeled outside, hand hewn inside.

  • Close on the rounded outside face of a D-log wall, unstained: pale peeled logs with the draw knife's long shallow facets running along each course, a few small knots, and a darker line where each log sits on the next.Click to enlarge

  • Close on a hand hewn interior wall in warm honey tones: flat courses scalloped across their faces by the hewing tool, dark knots scattered along the grain, and a fine joint line between each course.Click to enlarge

Every D-log section we mill

The mill’s own drawings, to scale, with the dimensions on them. Overall is the whole section, tongue to groove; stack is what one course shows on a finished wall, and what you multiply by the number of courses.

How many lineal feet will it take?

Square feet of wall into lineal feet of material, on the mill's own coverage figures. It opens on the 7×10 and lists this profile's products first, but every wall log and siding we carry a coverage figure for is in there.

The area you actually want covered, with windows and doors already taken out. Nothing here deducts them for you.

The answer will be here

Two figures: the bare conversion, and the same with the 15 percent waste allowance Sierra prices packages at. Pick a product and type the square footage.

What the number assumesfour things
  • Coverage is the mill's own figure for each product: the face left showing once it is installed, not the nominal size it is called.
  • The bare conversion is area divided by coverage. It assumes every foot of material lands on the wall, which no job ever does.
  • The quoted figure adds fifteen percent for waste and rounds up to a whole foot, which is the allowance Sierra prices packages with. It is not a rule for every job: a wall full of openings wastes more, a plain gable less.
  • Nothing here is rounded to a purchasable length, and there is no minimum order in this arithmetic. What lengths the mill runs, and what a load looks like, are part of a quote.
