Square feet of wall, into lineal feet of material
How much will it take?
Tell us the product and the square footage you mean to cover, and this does the conversion the mill does: how many lineal feet that is. The number to divide by is not the size printed on the product, because a 1x6 covers five inches and not six, so it uses the coverage figure off the mill's own list rather than anything read off a drawing.
Your wall
The answer will be here
Two figures: the bare conversion, and the same with the 15 percent waste allowance Sierra prices packages at. Pick a product and type the square footage.
The mill’s own figures
These are the mill's cedar list. Douglas fir and pine are quoted from the same kind of list, but the coverage column this page reads does not carry them, so ask and somebody will work yours out.
What the number assumesfour things
- Coverage is the mill's own figure for each product: the face left showing once it is installed, not the nominal size it is called.
- The bare conversion is area divided by coverage. It assumes every foot of material lands on the wall, which no job ever does.
- The quoted figure adds fifteen percent for waste and rounds up to a whole foot, which is the allowance Sierra prices packages with. It is not a rule for every job: a wall full of openings wastes more, a plain gable less.
- Nothing here is rounded to a purchasable length, and there is no minimum order in this arithmetic. What lengths the mill runs, and what a load looks like, are part of a quote.

The last column is the bare conversion for a thousand square feet, before the waste allowance. Rather than guess it from a profile name, contact us to calculate this product. Somebody at the mill has the real figure and will do it with you.

The figures above go with the message, so nobody has to ask you for them twice. A quote works from your drawings, not from a square footage, but this is a straight answer to start from.
